Helena Bonham Carter CBE is an English actress. Known for her roles in independent films and large-scale blockbusters, she is the recipient of such accolades as a British Academy Film Award, three Screen Actors Guild Awards, and nominations for twoย Academy Awards, nineย Golden Globe Awards, fourย Primetime Emmy Awards,ย and fourย British Academy Television Awards.
Bonham Carter grew up inย London. Her mother, Elena, was a psychotherapist, and her father, Raymondโgrandson ofย H.H. Asquith, who served asย prime minister from 1908 to 1916โwas a merchant banker who became partially paralyzed after an operation to remove a brain tumor. At age 13 Helena decided to pursue anย actingย career, and by 16 she had landed a role in a television commercial, playingย William Shakespeareโsย Julietย in an advertisement for a stereo system. The part proved to be an indication of Bonham Carterโs future career, which was built on a foundation of period pieces andย adaptationsย of works by such classic authors asย E.M. Forster, Shakespeare, andย Henry James.
Bonham Carter subsequently began to make a name for herself in more contemporary roles, such as that of Marla Singer,ย an eccentricย support-group addict inย David Fincherโsย Fight Clubย (1999); the film starredย Brad Pittย andย Edward Norton. Bonham Carter met directorย Tim Burtonย while working on his remake ofย Planet of the Apesย (2001), and the two became longtimeย romanticย partners. Bonham Carter subsequently worked with Burton on a number of filmsโincluding the animatedย Corpse Brideย (2005),ย Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Streetย (2007),ย Alice in Wonderlandย (2010), andย Dark Shadowsย (2012)โall of which featured another of Burtonโs favoured actors,ย Johnny Depp.
In 2019 she lent her voice to the TV seriesย The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, a 10-episode prequel to the 1982 puppet fantasyย The Dark Crystal. In 2019 she joined the cast of the TV seriesย The Crown, portrayingย Princess Margaret.
